Originally incarnated as outerwear for ranchers and manual labourers on the west coast of America, the denim jacket is now one of fashion’s favourite staple pieces. A timeless accessory, the jacket can be paired with anything to create a cool and stylish look. Today, the brand most associated with good-quality denim is, of course, Levi's. But what many people don’t know about is how Levi’s became one of the world’s biggest brands. Jacob Davis, inventor of the modern jean, produced a pair of trousers for a woman who was looking for some strong work clothes for her husband. Word quickly spread about this durable workwear and Jacob Davis was quickly inundated with orders. Knowing he needed help with production, he went into partnership with Levi Strauss – then a raw materials supplier and now one of the world’s biggest retailers.
Never out of fashion, denim saw another great surge in popularity in the 1970s and 80s, particularly among alternative youth groups, like Punk Rockers. In the 1990s and early 00s, musical groups and celebrities like B*witched and Britney Spears, often walked the red carpet clad in their favourite blue jeans, and they have remained a firm favourite in Ireland ever since.
The Versatility of Denim
A truly versatile item of clothing, denim jackets can be used to dress down or accentuate an outfit. They work particularly well when paired with a flowery or boho dress or skirt. Double denim has always been a contentious subject with fashion bloggers and stylists alike. Some are in favour of the fashion choice while others are very much against it, so much so in fact that the very wearing of double denim in public spaces has proven to be a very provocative counter culture statement in itself. When pairing denim together, it is generally a good idea to pick opposite shades of colour, like blue jeans with an oversize jacket.
A small cropped jacket is a great option for petite ladies who still want to win in the style stakes whilst not being weighed down with too much extra heavy material. Busy mums will love a soft stretch number, as it boasts a lot more give and movement than most other styles.
